Lodges and Camps

Lodges and Camps - Choose a Location and Destination that's right for you

There are 4 lodges on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. We recommend incorporating 1 or 2 nights on the rim of the Crater in every safari itinerary. The top lodge on the Crater is undoubtedly the luxurious Crater Lodge (5-star). The Sopa Lodge (4-star) is recommended for the serious wildlife enthusiast as it has a private and convenient access road to the Crater floor, which can save 1.5-hours off a round trip game drive. The Serena Lodge (4-star) offers the best deluxe accommodations while the Wildlife Lodge (3-star) is recommended for budget itineraries or as an alternate property should the other lodges be full.

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Lodge overview

Maybe you are a discerning traveler who has journeyed around the world seeking the ultimate in luxury accommodations. Maybe you are looking for an extraordinary way to celebrate that honeymoon, graduation, special anniversary, or milestone birthday. Or MAYBE you are simply looking for that one shining highlight to crown all of your other experiences in Africa. Regardless, we've got good news - you have finally found it here. Behold, the one and only Crater Lodge.

The Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, simply known by many (and referred to here) as the Crater Lodge, is the popular pick for not only the finest lodge on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater but in all of Tanzania. Whimsical architecture, rich décor, and remarkable views combine to create a castle in the sky of your wildest dreams. So many adjectives come to mind but still fall short of describing this palatial estate. Opulent, stunning, posh, luxurious, intimate, winsome, extravagant, eccentric, secluded, exotic, lavish, rich - but alas, words alone cannot properly capture this venue that we call Crater Lodge. Even pictures don't do it justice. You simply have to experience the extravagance first hand to understand what all the fuss is about, because so many other elements come into play.

The stunning views of the yawning Ngorongoro Crater alone are priceless. Combine this with the impeccable service (like a private butler), lavish details (like dozens of roses strewn throughout the room), and delectable dining (complete with chandeliers, candles, crystal and silver) and you may have the crowning highlight of your entire African safari right here.

In spite of its "Versailles-like" ambience, this Lodge exhibits no trace of pretentiousness or conceit. The staff is warm, caring, and thoughtful. It is their most sincere desire that you have the best time of your safari right there at their beautiful Lodge, and they definitely go the extra mile to make it so.

The buildings are situated into three intimate guest camps. No matter which camp you find yourself in, you will certainly enjoy your private suite with all the luxuries of a royal palace. Each thatched rondavel comes complete with private butler service, a cozy sitting area with crackling fireplace, dozens of fresh roses, an elegant bath, chandelier lighting, intricately carved furnishings, plush window treatments, soaring spaces, and magnificent picture windows with stunning views of the Crater below.

Leather, velvet, crystal, banana leaves, and dark woods fill the space with rich textures, soothing tones, and a luxurious ambience. Splashes of silver and gold ornaments dance in the flicker of the fire. In spite of the obviously flamboyant surroundings, a great deal of the charm of Crater Lodge is in the personalized service and thoughtful details - every seemingly trivial deed, whether it be your meal presentation, the drawing of your bath, even your laundry service , is done with an extra finesse and flair that has become the hallmark of Crater Lodge.

The Ngorongoro Crater itself is a dramatic amphitheatre of life, surrounded by the steep jagged walls of the collapsed volcano that created it. So you've gotten up early and asked the staff to pack a picnic breakfast to not miss any action? Good choice! There is a special atmosphere in the Crater at the light of dawn not to be missed. You'll notice the top of the rim is chilly and clad with mist in the early morning. As your land rover descends the winding road from the top of the ridge to the Crater floor, you'll gradually emerge from the clouds and notice a steady shift in both temperature and scenery.

The leafy forest and morning chill are slowly but surely replaced by sparser vegetation and warmer air. Eventually the landscape melds into the tawny grasslands of the Crater floor, which are teeming with big game. Early morning in the Crater is a time of spellbinding beauty and special solitude (since many of the less ambitious tourists are still sleeping.) Luminous clouds that hung low in the night now roll dramatically above and pile up against the emerald Crater wall, just not quite high enough to escape the rising sun. Shafts of morning sunlight filter through the billowing clouds and create bold shadows that shift and dance below. As the sun rises the air continues to warm. The whistling breeze sweeps down the steep walls and over the grasses at the Crater floor, seeming to whisper of ancient memories of the fiery volcanoes that created this mythical place.

There is dramatic scenery to behold here, and yes the geological history is very intriguing, but the real stars of this show are the ANIMALS! For as far as the eye can see, you will be surrounded by generously sized herds of all types of animals, all taking haven in what has been called "Africa's Garden of Eden." Gazelles and buffalo, wildebeest and zebra, elephant and even the rare black rhino live in concentrated numbers here. There is a realistic chance that you will actually be able to see cheetahs hunting in such a confined area. The lions in the Crater are certainly not tame, but they are somewhat used to vehicles, and you may just find them seeking shade in the shadow of your land rover! Hyenas and other smaller carnivores like the serval cat also make this beautiful place home.

Travel to the western edge of the Crater and enter the magical Lerai forest. Ancient trees draped in vines rise up from a deep leafy carpet of ferns and wide banners of tropical leaves. Look for sly leopards perched high in the tree boughs, hiding in the leaves and dappled light. Also watch for elephants ambling through shady thickets. Emerge from the forest and keep your eyes open for a sighting of the rare black rhino! During a delightful picnic lunch you'll be able to stretch those legs and watch for hippos spouting water in the spring pool nearby. As the sun continues to rise throughout the day, you'll want to shed that sweater and maybe peel off those zippered pant-legs. Get your cameras ready as you journey to the sparkling soda lake and witness thousands of pink flamingoes preening and reflecting in the still waters - a fantastic sight.

Location

The Crater Lodge is perched on the edge of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater between the Serengeti and Lake Manyara National Park. It lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which covers more than 3000 square miles of pristine African wilderness. The Lodge is set just a few miles to the west of the Crater ascent road. The Ngorongoro Crater is the center piece of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which covers more than 3000 square miles of pristine African wilderness. The Crater floor is a natural refuge for thousands of indigenous African animals and many species of insects and birds. Lush highlands surround the Crater, rolling away to the golden volcanic plains and glittering soda lakes of the Great Rift Valley.

Accommodations

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge comprises three separate and intimate camps: North Camp (12 suites), South Camp (12 suites) and Tree Camp (6 suites). Each suite consists of a double rondavel with one section being the bedroom and sitting area and the other being completely dedicated to the carnivorous bathroom. The eccentric and creatively decorated interiors combine silver, gold and ruby colors under banana-leaf ceilings. Furnishings and fixtures are bewildering and include a beaded chandelier, voluptuous raw silk curtains, various antiques and hand crafted wooden structures. Every room comes with Crater Lodge's exclusive butler service. Your butler will discreetly tend to your every need including serving you meals in suite, stoking your fireplace or mixing you drinks.

The rooms at Crater Lodge are massive and magnificent. First of all, every part of the room provides breathtaking views of the below Crater with floor to ceiling glass windows. With a pair of binoculars it is possible to see the whole show from here. The oversized beds are fitted with fine linens, a velvet duvet, electric blankets and each rests upon a unique hand crafted four-poster bed frame with a spectacular headboard. Just off from the bedroom is the sitting area complete with fireplace, two large leather backed chairs, small table and footstools. Directly in front of the bedroom is your own private wooden viewing deck.

The second section of your suite consists of the bathroom area, which is separated by an intricately carved wooded divider. The highlight of this section is the glorious bathtub and above are two-dozen red roses placed in an ornate vase. Of course, just like everywhere else, the view from the bathtub is superb as it looks down on the Crater floor through a small window. There is a separate shower in a bamboo structure with twin hand basins. Lastly, there is a private bathroom and yes; there is even a view from here.

The main guest areas are just as impressive as your suite and consist of a library, lounge and formal and informal dining rooms. They offer a great place to mingle with other guests and share the safari highlights for the day. There is a particularly good gift shop and art gallery located on the premises. Also, Internet access is available at an additional cost. For your safety, you will be accompanied at night when walking to and from the main Lodge. Large male buffalos are regular visitors to the grounds of the Crater Lodge and extra caution is required when walking around the property.

The Lodge is situated at the rim of the Crater at an elevation of about 7,000 feet. It can get quite cold at night and in the early morning so make sure to pack appropriate attire. On the contrary, expect highs on the Crater floor where you will be spending the majority of your day in the upper 70s and lower 80s so it's best to layer your clothing.

There are three separate 'camps' at Ngorongoro Crater Lodge and each has its own separate facilities (lounge, library, dining room, etc.): North Camp (12 suites), South Camp (12 suites) and Tree Camp (6 suites). North and South Camp are identical. Tree Camp is set apart from the others a bit, the rooms are slightly different, and overall it is well-suited for small groups.

Food and Drink

The food at Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is simply wonderful; extravagant, delectable, and stunningly presented with Crater Lodge flair.

Breakfast is served mixed buffet style in the informal dining room. It consists of a large assortment of fruits, cereals and breads. Orders are separately taken for eggs, bacon, ham, etc. However, if you wish, your butler is happy to serve you either breakfast in bed or in front of your cozy fireplace. Our standard itineraries typically include an early morning game drive (6AM) in the Crater. This is a superb game drive and includes an amazing bush breakfast from the Crater Lodge. After an hour or so game driving in the early morning or when you get hungry, you will stop to indulge in a grand safari breakfast by Ngoitokitok Springs.

The best option for lunch is to arrange a picnic down on the Crater floor either by the hippo pool or the small scenic lake. Alternatively, lunch is also offered at the Lodge. Dinner is quite a production and a fairly formal affair. It is offered in the formal domed dining room complete with glamorous chandeliers, flickering candles, glittering crystal and weighty silver. Dinner is delicious and consists of Pan-African cuisine. Once again, you always have the choice to have a more private and romantic meal in the comfort of your room. This is actually a very good option as your butler can set up quite a spread in front of your cozy fireplace. There is a good variety of beer, wine and cocktails available and most are included in your safari package.

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge
Lodge overview

What are your priorities when traveling on safari? Do you value a premium lodge location with easy access? Do you appreciate stunning sunset views? Is close proximity to wildlife a worthy consideration in your pick of top accommodations? If you said yes to any of these, then Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge may be the perfect fit for you!

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge boasts a private access road to the Crater floor that is HALF as long as all other properties on the rim, and TWICE as easy to transverse. This easy access road is a major perk for those safari enthusiasts who want to be the FIRST vehicle in the Crater at dawn and maximize their wildlife viewing experience!

Nestled on the brink of Ngorongoro Crater's soaring eastern rim, Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge offers comfortable accommodations with especially convenient access to the Crater's teeming wildlife below. Being the one and ONLY lodge on the eastern Crater rim offering sunset views, Ngorongoro Sopa certainly has an enviable location! Generously sized picture windows are abundant throughout the Lodge; the dining room, bar, lounge, swimming pool, gardens, and guest rooms are all situated to take maximum advantage of the stunning Crater vistas below.

As far as accommodations go, Ngorongoro Sopa offers comfortable and spacious rooms in a large hotel-style venue. At ninety-six (96) rooms total, Ngorongoro Sopa is the largest hotel on the Crater rim. A large hotel like Ngorongoro Sopa may lack the intimacy and personalized service you might expect at a smaller property. However, the Lodge does offer many amenities of variety and convenience since the property caters to such a wide audience.

The individual rooms are spacious with large en suite bathrooms. A window solarium with two rocking chairs is the obvious highlight of each room, with most offering jaw-dropping views of the gaping Crater below. Babysitting services, conference facilities, a swimming pool, laundry service, duty managers, a doctor on call, a fully stocked bar, and 24-hour generator power are just some of the many amenities you can expect. There is also a large gift shop on the premises offering an assortment of souvenirs as well as various toiletry items for your convenience. Dining (breakfast, lunch, & dinner) is buffet style, and caters to a variety of international palates. Afternoon tea and pastries are served between 3pm- 6pm each afternoon in the coffee bar on the lower level within the lobby.

The real highlight of staying here is the safari itself. Leaving the Lodge by 6am makes you appreciate every golden moment of your morning game drive, and the easy access road from the Lodge to the Crater floor definitely maximizes your time! Within minutes you are fully embarked on an exciting game drive in search of the elusive black rhino, the notorious Crater lion prides, and all the other magnificent wonders to be discovered on the Crater floor!

Leave the Crater floor in time to pass through the park gate by 5pm, after which the gate will close. You should be back to the Lodge in time to witness a spectacular sunset in the western sky! Behold the inflated orb of molten sun as it sinks over the far west rim and the Crater itself is bathed in a rosy flush of light and color. Entertainment in its most natural form, SUNSET at Ngorongoro Sopa is an event you will not forget.

Location

The Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge is perched on the crest of Leala Hill, on the eastern rim of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater in the volcanic highlands of northern Tanzania. Being the only accommodation sited on the Eastern Rim, the Lodge offers stunning panoramic views of the daily sunset over the far western rim... a sight you will not soon forget. An easy access road to the Crater floor maximizes early morning game-viewing. The eastern descent road is relatively easy to pass, and it typically takes half as long to travel to the Crater floor from Sopa vs. the competing lodges on the opposite rim.

It can get quite cold at night and in the early m orning so make sure to pack appropriate attire. On the contrary, expect highs on the Crater floor where you will be spending the majority of your day in the upper 70s and lower 80s so it's best to layer your clothing.

The Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge opened its doors to travelers in 1992. Perched on the Eastern rim of the Ngorongoro, this facility boasts 96 spacious rooms and well-appointed facilities including a dinning room and a cozy lounge. There is beautiful pool terrace and garden that overlooks the magnificent Crater floor.

Each large room features two queen size beds, en suite bathrooms and a solarium (glass enclosed porch) with rocking chairs, most of which overlook the Crater view. Furniture and fixtures are simple and modest. Other furnishings include a safe, mini-bar (on request), nightstands, and a writing desk/buffet with a large arced mirror. The interior of the rooms is finished in southwestern style bedspreads, curtains, and Spanish stucco walls. Arched doorways are trimmed in red clay brick, and such bricks also wreath the doorways, nightstands, and the head and foot of the beds. Central heating radiators line the outside wall, but are only used in the winter months. Each suite is fully carpeted, with tile on the bathroom floor. Candle-like sconces light the en suite bathroom. The sunny-hued bathroom is equipped with a vanity, toilet, hairdryer, shaver socket, and spacious shower. Hot water is only available between the hours of 5am-9am, and again from 5pm - 8pm.

The main guest areas are vast spaces with soaring ceilings. The reception and dining areas are designed in grand Sopa style and feature floor to ceiling glass windows that look out over the magnificent Crater below. Both are well decorated with various African artifacts, sculptures and wooden carvings.

The lounge and bar areas are superb places to mingle with other guests and share the safari highlights for the day. The lounge and bar area are located in another large separate room just off from the lobby. There is a traditional semi-circular bar and various comfortable chairs and couches spaced throughout the room. There is also a particularly good gift shop located on the premises which stocks gift items as well as other items including film and toiletries.

Ngorongoro Serena Lodge

Lodge Overview

Suspended on the jagged rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, with sweeping panoramic views of the crater floor, is the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge. Cloaked in morning mist and dense forest, the stone built lodge blends in beautifully with its natural surroundings. As your land rover navigates the rocky road leading up to the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge, keep an eye open for resident elephants known to leisurely much on leafy greens - right in the lodge's backyard!

The exterior of the buildings, as well as many of the interior walls and massive vertical columns, are wrapped in smooth boulder-like lava rocks that climb to the top of the soaring ceilings and wreath the arched entrances of the main hallways. Much of the stonework outside is draped in moss or ivy and the lush gardens surrounding the lodge compliment its overall appearance. Take a step back in time as you peruse the prehistorically themed interior of the lodge, lit by lanterns and firelight. The passages are decorated with wooden carvings, Maasai artifacts and tribal spears. Delightful "cave-wall" paintings of animals are charmingly stained on the textured stucco walls of the main dining room, as well as each individual sleeping room.

Crackling fire places inside the common areas add warmth to the "mountain lodge" atmosphere, and are especially cozy since the temperatures outside can be quite chilly at this elevation. Gaze at the jaw-dropping views of the crater floor offered from majestic picture windows that line the lounge and dining room, or better yet from the seclusion of your room's own private balcony; each individual room offers its own stunning view of the retired volcanic cauldron below. From its ideal hilltop location, the lodge's panoramic visual of the crater floor and sparkling soda lake below is both breathtaking and surreal.

The day's adventures have surely worked up an appetite, and a feast fit for a king is served buffet style in the main dining room. With such a varied display of fresh and delicious foods, everyone will find something that suits their craving. Retreat to your room with a drink or just collapse into your cozy bed from the excitement of the day's activities and lose yourself in fantastic safari dreams.

Accommodation

The Ngorongoro Serena Lodge consists of 75 comfortable and spacious rooms. These rooms are elegant and well appointed with classy leather headboards, brass lamps, simple nightstands and a quaint writing desk. Charming sketches, or "cave paintings", of African animals are featured on the pale stucco walls in true tribal style. Each room has a separate bathroom that boasts a contemporary vanity, hairdryer and spacious walk-in shower. Accommodations at this lodge are heated, making for a very comfortable "climate controlled" stay in spite of the lodge's lofty elevation and correspondingly low temperatures, especially at night. The highlight of each sleeping room is the private stone terrace, accessed by full glass doors, that offers sweeping views of the crater floor below and blue mountain ranges in the hazy distance. See if you can make out the giant herds of animals with your binoculars from the comfort of your own room!

Delightful wooden carvings, artifacts and stylish accessories are tastefully arranged in the common areas of the lodge, and a well-stocked gift shop allows you to browse unique souvenirs for all those less fortunate folks you left back home. A vibrant mosaic of colored wooden inlays wrap the framing of the main bar in pleasing geometric patterns, while a ring of bar stools welcome the weary traveler to sit and relax over a refreshing beverage. A roaring fireplace in the main lounge provides the perfect central gathering space for sharing tall tales of the day's adventures, and is surrounded by a white washed stucco enclosure trimmed in smooth stones and lined with dark wooden benches. With a charming resemblance to totem poles, wooden columns line the interior of the vaulted dining room, dyed white and artfully carved to display patterns of teak color beneath. Massive picture windows offering magnificent views of the crater are available in the dining room, bar and lounge areas. The staff is very friendly and a drink in the lounge after a day out game driving the infamous crater is a good option.

Location

Ngorongoro Serena Lodge is perched on the edge of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater between the Serengeti and Lake Manyara National Park. It lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which covers more than 3000 square miles of pristine African wilderness.

The Ngorongoro Crater is very small at only about 10 miles across. With just one game drive in the Crater, it is possible to circumnavigate the crater several times and see all the main highlights. However, every safari we offer includes two separate game drives in the Crater over a course of two days including one early morning 6AM drive. The goal on the early morning game drive is to be the first person in the Crater that day. Animals are generally more active morning, which makes the early morning game drive option an excellent choice. Accordingly, we h3ly recommend only one night at the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge (allows for 2 separate game drives) on all shorter duration safaris. Only on longer duration safaris would it be advisable to spend a second night at the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge.

Food and Drink

The food and service at Ngorongoro Serena Lodge is excellent. Breakfast is quite a spread and is served buffet style in the dining room. It consists of a large assortment of fruits, cereals, breads, eggs and bacon. However, if you do want to try and be the FIRST vehicle in the crater you may choose to have the staff pack you a picnic breakfast to go! Our standard itineraries typically include an early morning game drive (6AM) in the crater. This is a superb game drive and includes a bush breakfast from the Serena Lodge. The best option for lunch is to arrange a picnic down on the crater floor either by the hippo pool or the small scenic lake. Alternatively, lunch is also offered at the lodge but we highly recommend opting for a serene picnic to maximize your time in the crater and minimize the time on the long bumpy road to that navigates the crater wall to and from the lodges.

Dinner at the lodge features wonderful food with international flair, and is quite a large production. A large buffet is available to hungry travelers in the beautiful main dining room, featuring a smorgasbord of fresh soups, crisp salads, newly prepared entrees and mouthwatering desserts. There is a good variety of beer, wine and cocktails available at an additional charge.

Tucked deep inside a magical forest on the misty precipice of an extinct volcano is one of the most delightful safari lodges you’ll find anywhere in Tanzania. Lemala Ngorongoro is a top ADS pick for accommodations on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. And here’s why…

Hidden within a misty forest of towering acacia, dangling creepers and sunlit ferns, the setting seems to be taken right from the magical kingdom of a fairy tail. Soaring umbrella trees form a natural corridor on each side of a pebbled pathway that link ten (10) spacious safari style tents. Wait, is this a lodge or is it a camp? The answer is that it is the best of both! If you are looking for authentic safari ambience at a value, without sacrificing comfort, and you want to spend your time immersed in the wilderness (and not immersed in crowds of tourists), then THIS is just the lodge for you!

In addition to its authentic safari ambience, this semi-permanent venue on the rim of the Crater is all about LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! Lemala Ngorongoro is the only lodge located inside the Ngorongoro Crater park gate. And it is one of only two lodges on the Crater’s remote Eastern rim, a perfect perch that offers some of the most stunning sunset views in all of Tanzania. Lemala Ngorongoro shares the same access road with only one other lodge, Ngorongoro Sopa, so you won’t have to worry about land rover traffic. And best of all, this particular access road to the Crater floor is HALF as long as all other properties on the rim, and TWICE as easy to transverse. This easy access road is a major perk for those safari enthusiasts who want to be the FIRST vehicle in the Crater at dawn and maximize their wildlife viewing experience!

Accommodations consist of just ten intimate safari-style tents. The camp is “semi-permanent”, meaning it is actually taken down at certain times of the year. Because of its mobile nature, this camp does not have many of the more established fixtures you might find at other permanent camps and lodges such as swimming pools, manicured gardens, elaborate structures or even underground plumbing. However, the staff here does a remarkable job in making everything extremely comfortable and offering guests a level of luxury that will suit the most discerning of travelers.

This considerable effort shows up in the smallest of details, such as shimmering chandeliers over the dining room table, a fully stocked liqueur cabinet, four-course gourmet meals, and hot showers made to order. The flicker of torches lights the dark pathways in the evenings and invite you to the Lodge’s common areas for sundowners. The size of the camp gives it an inherently cozy feel and strangers quickly become friends. Guests join one another around a brilliantly lit bonfire in the evenings for drinks, and then feast together by candlelight around a big timber dining table. The dining tent shares a roof with the lounge and sitting area, which is furnished by overstuffed couch cushions, coffee table, and a fully stocked liqueur cabinet. Guests are escorted by arrow-wielding Maasai warriors back and forth from their tents to the common areas as needed.

Luxury, wildlife, and nature combine here for the ultimate safari experience. Lemala Ngorongoro’s unique location, intimate size, and exceptional value make it one of our top picks for accommodations on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater.

Location

With Lemala Ngorongoro, it’s ALL about location! The camp is perched on the crest of Leala Hill, on the eastern rim of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater in the volcanic highlands of northern Tanzania. At an altitude of over 7,500 feet, this location offers remarkable views of the sleeping Crater floor below. Being one of only two accommodations sited on the Eastern Rim, the Lodge offers stunning panoramic views of the daily sunset over the far western rim… a sight you will not soon forget. An easy access road to the Crater floor maximizes early morning game-viewing. The eastern descent road is relatively easy to pass, and it typically takes half as long to travel to the Crater floor from Sopa vs. the competing lodges on the opposite rim.

It can get quite cold at night and in the early morning so make sure to pack appropriate attire. On the contrary, expect highs on the Crater floor where you will be spending the majority of your day in the upper 70s and lower 80s (degrees F) so it’s best to layer your clothing.

With construction just recently completed in 2007, Lemala is a relatively new lodge, and still a bit of a secret! The main Lodge Tent is set on a hilltop and includes a comfy lounge with oversized couches, liquor cabinet, dining tent and nearby fire-pit. All of these areas have glorious views out over the Northern Serengeti’s surrounding patchwork of woodlands and broken plains.
Sleeping accommodations at Lemala Camp consist of just ten (10) intimate luxury tents under canvas. The tents are arranged at ground level on wooden platforms with stylish rugs. The tents can be arranged to accommodate single or double beds, and there are two family style tents available with 1 queen and 2 single beds each. Each tent features its own heater, and the beds are draped in luxuriously comfy duvets to keep you warm and toasty. Each tent is elegantly appointed with a quaint writing desk, storage trunks, a coffee station, and two bedside tables complete with candle-lamps. At the back of each safari tent is an enclosed en suite bathroom complete with a dressing area, proper flushing toilet, vanity and sink with running water, and a safari style shower that can be filled with up to 40 liters of hot water upon request.

The tents are spaced far enough apart from one another to ensure relative privacy. You will be escorted by the camp staff to and from dinner each evening to assure your safety.

Food and Drink

Get ready for serious gourmet in the bush! Meals at Lemala Camp are absolutely fantastic. Breakfast consists of a mixed buffet with orders taken for eggs, omelets, bacon, toast, etc. The buffet consists of yogurt, nuts, cereal, breads, fruit and juice. Alternatively, breakfast boxes can be arranged for early morning game drives. Similarly to breakfast, you have your choice of dining in the main tent for lunch or enjoying a lunch box if you plan a full day adventure game drive. The choice is yours – this is YOUR private safari, after all!

Dinner is a wonderful event to look forward to at Lemala Camp, and it is one of the few places where everyone joins together for a family-style dinner at one long dinner table. Once everything is prepared the staff seats everyone around an elegant candle-lit table set with weighty silverware and crystal and draped in fine linen. Dinner consists of four delicious courses with the main course being a choice of either chicken, beef, lamb or pasta.

House beverages including soft drinks, beer, wine and house wine are included with dinner at Lemala Camp.

Game Viewing

The real highlight of staying here is the safari itself. Leaving the Lodge by 6am makes you appreciate every golden moment of your morning game drive, and the easy access road from the Lodge to the Crater floor definitely maximizes your time! Within minutes you are fully embarked on an exciting game drive in search of the elusive black rhino, the notorious Crater lion prides, and all the other magnificent wonders to be discovered on the Crater floor!
The Ngorongoro Crater is a world heritage site, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and is commonly referred to as the 8th wonder of the world. The 2,000 feet high walls of the approximately 10 mile wide Crater create a natural amphitheatre for the densest populations of large animals anywhere. It is a microcosm of the vast Serengeti National Park and in one day it is possible to see a staggering array of East African wildlife including the big carnivores. The Crater lives up to its infamous reputation with abundant and easily accessible wildlife and offers a reasonable chance to see lion, hyena and cheetah in action. The Crater is truly awe-inspiring and will surely be one of the highlights of your safari.

The Ngorongoro Crater is sometimes called a microcosm of the Serengeti because there are five distinct habitats located in the relatively small area of the Crater floor (150 square miles) that mirror the major habitats of its enormous neighbor, the Serengeti ecosystem (15,000 square miles).
Lerai Forest is located in the western section of the Crater and here you will find many of the giant tusker bull elephants. Lerai Forest is also known for its resident leopards and there is a realistic chance to see these noble cats here. In the central-western area is Lake Magadi, which plays host to thousands of migratory flamingos. The extreme southern and northern sections of the Crater are home to two large seasonal swamps. These areas are excellent for hippo and many species of water birds. Spread throughout the central area of the Crater is the short grass plains. These plains are home to thousands of wildebeest, zebra and Thomson’s gazelle. Many of the resident lion, hyena and cheetah can be found here close to their prey. In the eastern section of the Crater are the longer grasslands where thousands of buffalo roam. One of smallest carnivores, the serval cat, has frequently been spotted here in the tall grass.
